About

Serena Monet Martin (b. 1997) is an African American artist based in Oakland, California. Her portrait practice is rooted in moments of emotional connection, focusing on individuals who evoke a sense of presence, curiosity, or recognition. Working intuitively, she approaches portraiture as an act of attention—translating not only physical likeness, but the energy and aura of her subjects.

Monet’s work is informed by her experience growing up in environments that lacked diversity, where she often felt both hypervisible and isolated. This awareness shapes her visual language: figures are frequently placed against stark white backgrounds, echoing feelings of exposure while also creating space for focus and reverence.

Her portraits function as acts of honoring, emphasizing visibility, representation, and care. By depicting a diverse range of individuals, Monet creates a sense of community within her work—one that reflects both a personal longing and a broader commitment to ensuring that people feel seen.
