About
Serena Monet Martin (b. 1997) is an African American artist based in Oakland, California, who embraces the influence of social media for her portrait work. She uses the advantage of the immediate connection that the internet provides as she is able to find subjects that otherwise wouldn’t be accessible. Her main focus is to represent diversity and the characteristics of individuals who communicate energy via the digital landscape.
“I admire women who confidently embrace the spotlight. I center my pencil portraiture around women of color who show their authentic self particularly through social media platforms, despite the risk of judgement and criticism. It's my way of expressing gratitude to them for their courage. Growing up as a young black girl, I lacked diverse representation. Now, as I build my portfolio of portraits, these women are my inspiration and my cherished subjects. I convey their boldness onto my off white paper, isolating their image without any background to emphasize their presence. Every detail is meticulously rendered because capturing their essence is crucial to me. I want them to feel truly seen and celebrated.”
